[A part of him is kind of dreading talking to the Cat after some of their last conversations, but he figures he at least owes him an update after the chaos of last night. He picks voice, because he hasn't seen the Cat do text, and hopefully it might be enough to dissuade the use of video again.]

Hey. Made it through to morning. I'm going to be going south to get something Ginger made me, but I'm going to be checking in with Karkat while I'm out here.

I see. Be sure that you do. We must retrieve something of Karkat's before we can come find you again.

[The Cat may here a quiet sigh of relief at this choice.]

Yeah, he told me. Some jackass took his doll and is threatening his life, right? That's why I told him to go on ahead. I don't want him to end up dead on my account.

I've still got yours and mine, so we're safe from that, at least.

I never doubted you would keep them safe. As I will do my best to keep Karkat safe from whatever fate the boy Vanitas has planned for him.

[He sounds a little doubtful. It's just weird, y'know. Vantas, Vanitas.]

Make sure Karkat's careful with his busted arm. Sometimes you have to climb and stuff like that. I'll try to be careful too.

[It's an honest question, one that's been bothering him since earlier, and he doesn't sound happy to be asking it.]

[He holds silent at first, because it's not really the answer he expected. And normally he could go with that. Give him an "okay, cool" and be done. But now his mouth opens as it has times before, speaking to his thoughts:]

It felt like you did the last time I died. Like you had to look after me because I was too bad at doing it myself.

[ He thinks hard about what to say here. How to reassure him without being too... sentimental. ]

I have known many great heroes with incredible skill at survival. Most fail to take care of themselves in other ways.
